Well, as any of you reading this AND know me... work has been hell the last month. But I like being busy, so I don't really mind. I just hate "working" when "working" means sitting around waiting for people to make decisions. Bleech.
Anyways, what better way to get things rolling again than free stuff? You're right, there really isn't a better way! But before the goodies, one must follow my thought process to found "free goods":
1) So, periodically I check out Cool Hunting, a blog covering hip/cool trends. (Okay, uncool that they blog about noticing these trends, just think about it as them working for you.) And among the many posts of the new hotness/uber-radness that won't hit the mainstream for months, they also release videos! And these videos are downright watchable!
2) Recently they released their 50th video and it falls into the interesting category. It has two features that make it interesting for me: great video work (color/montage/content) and the music was quite unusual/fantastic. The 50th episode is a background on a crazy new musical interface type/ crazy scientist person living in the Catskills. I liked it because it reminds me of the suckers I went to school with AND how it's kinda cool (get it? 'cause they hunted it down) to be a dweeby nerd (Brian Dewan) that makes insturments out of old 8 Track players.
3) So, the music: it was great. And in the true commercial spirit, the site teamed up with iTunes to allow you the pleasure of downloading the songs in a convenient playlist for only $45.99!
4) What? Download AND pay for music? Surely it exists somewhere for free... right?
5) Well, no. That would be illegal, but I always check a band's website to see if they have free downloads (yay internet!). AND THEY DID!
6) Enter Yo La Tengo. Generally I'm not a fan. But my smart, beautiful and sexy wife is a fan, so I figure I should check out the site so I can have something she'll actually be interested in listening to over dinner.
7) Well, the songs on the site are not the same as in the Cool Hunting webisode... but there are some from the new album which I ACTUALLY LIKE:
- From I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass, "Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind" (14.8 MB)
- From I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass, "Beanbag Chair" (3.5 MB)
Among others...
In conclusion, there are two free songs today, and a myriad of fun to
come. Hope this brings some sunshine to those out there who need
it the most :)
PS- Download this too if you get a chance (it's badass):
